Current Notepad

Day 3 of Michelle of Write So Fluid‘s Picture-A-Day Challenge

3 Notebooks

Well. I couldn’t choose. I’ve three on the go, not including Evernote on all the appropriate gadgetry.

The one on the left is the studio notebook, a lovely spontaneous gift from the lovely Laura, Producer at Slung Low. First thing I do when I sit down to work in the morning is ‘download’ all the faff in my brain, the to-dos, the not-to-forgets, the think-about-thises to this notebook. A long list of inconsequentials plus the big main task of the day, just to get it all on paper and stop it rattling around in me noggin. And then I forget about it and get on with the big main task. I fondly refer to it as the Brain Dump (I did get that term from some online service but forget where now…).

The one on the right was a little treat, not really used much but occasionally very handy – a manuscript moleskin, 5-lined staves. It lives either in my handbag or on the bedside cabinet. In a way, it’s similar to the previous notebook in that it’s quite useful for getting rid of not-so-currently-useful ideas that bubble up from the subconscious and get in the way of the current project. And earworms AKA SHUT UP BRAIN I’M TRYING TO SLEEP tunes.

Saving the best for last, the one in the middle… the SHATNERPAD! He lives in my handbag or in the studio. He goes everywhere with me. I love this notepad, a gift from the lovely hubby, John (who’s also doing this Picture A Day Challenge). Kirk’s cheeky smirk and the ridiculously 60s sexist quote make me grin every time I see them, and helps keep things in perspective when I’m maybe stressing about schedules or technical problems out on projects etc. Every few pages has a quote from ST:TOS. It’s also quite nice to be such and an out-and-out geek these days (NOBODY I knew liked Star Trek when I was growing up. Such a cultural desert… I remained a closeted sci-fi geek ’til my early 20s. I KNOW. These days everyone and their grandmother is into the Trek.*)
