Here’s a link to an article I wrote for SCORECast Online’s awesome new site on ‘diversifying’ your job description to get more work: One Man Band. This starts a regular column for me called Composer’s Tips and Tricks.
They’ve also a podcast which is seriously useful and entertaining stuff.
SCORECast Online is fast becoming a big site for film composers and the like – go have a look round now, it’s rather good.
Hi Heather
I read your post on SCOREcast and decided to find your site. I’m a big supporter of multi-skilling (though obivously not multi-tasking ‘cos I’m a bloke). I see convergence in the media industry, where the edges of specific disciplines are blurred and we all have access to kit for all aspects of media creation. So creatives need to diversify to be part of the whole business, or risk getting stuck in a corner with only limited skills. I’m going to have a listen to some of your music now!
Hi Pete – thanks for your comment; I think you succinctly described what took me a whole article to say! Brilliant 🙂
(+ hope you like the music! )
Hi Heather,
Just read the SCOREcast post and agree with you totally (although I do think blokes can multitask, Pete!).
As an indie film composer, I’ve just decided to quit my teaching job (foolish, maybe) and concentrate on freelance work. However, decent paid scoring jobs come along rarely and I need to diversify and use my ‘kit’ – website design, etc.
I think you covered several areas in your article that I hadn’t even considered. Thanks!
Even more importantly, I enjoyed your music very much!
Alan
