There are plenty of personality and psychometric tests and the likes out there to analyse your personality, your likes and dislikes, your needs, wants and life goals and then come up with your ideal job or perfect career.
But I’ve got the best test of all for deciding if your job is right for you…
Near where I live there’s a shopping mall called Meadowhall. It’s lovingly referred to as ‘Meadowhell’ by the locals and pretty much anyone who’s been there. The main problem is how busy it gets, how hot and crowded and smelly. The queues can stretch for miles. Especially at this time of year in the run up to Christmas (three guesses for where I was today).
If, upon visiting this establishment (or any other similar venue, there’s plenty of them all around the world), you can think of nothing better than getting back to your day job/career, you’re in the right job. You can breathe a sigh of relief (but only after you’ve left the mall: breathe as little as possible whilst inside!).
Or… even if it’s not your perfect job, you’re certainly not in the wrong one. If you’re happier in this godforsaken place than you are at your current place of work, if it’s actually enjoyable and a relaxing change of pace for you, you really need to find a new job. And fast. Maybe to working in Meadowhall 😉
Joking aside, the truth is that if you’re not working doing what you love, you have to ask yourself why you’re doing it. If you don’t change your path today, why would you change it tomorrow, and you’ll be stuck on that path until you die. If you don’t love your job, why? Is there anything you can change about it that will make you look forward to it rather than instead to the weekend? What is it about your job that makes you want to do it, that isn’t just a means to an end (=money)? Why spend 40 hours a week wishing time would pass as quickly as possible?
Take responsibility for life’s direction. No-one else will. 🙂
